Lyrics

On this page, you'll find the TJ Nix's lyrics and stories behind the songs on our site.
All 8 songs on the new CD are here.

The "story" part in the gray box is something we call TJ's 'Where did that tune come from?'.

Sanctified (instrumental)

When Paul Plumeri and Duke Williams were touring the Southeast back in the 80's, they came upon a roadside tent service, and heard the excitement of the congregation from the uplifting music being played. Years later Paul captured that excitement with his guitar work on Sanctified. TJ added a melody on harp. With this fun, feel-good song, we've got people dancing in the aisles. Halleluiah! You've been Sanctified.

Got My Dickies® On

Oh, by the way, when I'm not singing, dancing or wailing on my harp, I'm usually building houses. Which brings me to how this silly song was created. Everyday my employees would show up for work, and my way of asking them if they were ready to get the job done was to say "do you got your Dickies on?". Most of the crew would be wearing Dickies so they would answer me "I got my Dickies on, I'm going to work, boss".

The rest is history. These lyrics are a combination of some reasons the crew came to work, and why they couldn't wait till the end of the day and get home.

Got my Dickies on. Going to work baby.
Got my Dickies on. Gone to work.
Slavin, behavin, puttin up with the man.
Justa bring some dough home ta you.
Got My Dickies on. Got my Dickies on.

Got my Dickies on. It's a hard day's work.
Got my Dickies on. The boss is a jerk.
Slavin , behavin, workin overtime.
I'm just trying to get back home to you.
I'm just trying to get back home to you.

(Solo)

Got my Dickies on. Heard the whistle blow.
Takin my Dickies off now. It's time to go.
I've been slavin behavin, puttin up with the man.
Now I'll bring my love home to you.
I said I'll bring my lovin home to you.
And baby let me tell you. I love you so much.
I'll get up and do it again.
I said I'll get up and do it again.
(4x) Got my Dickies on.

You Can't Stop It Now

B.B. King's classic song, "The Thrill Is Gone" has always been one of my favorite tunes. But I always felt there was more to the story, after experimenting with the key of A minor and those dark tones. I was listening to the great B.B.'s "The Thrill Is Gone" for what may have been the one thousandth time in my life, when I was inspired to write these four lines: You can't stop it now baby. The thrill has gone away. You can't stop it now. I'm leaving today. The rest of the story fell right into place. Thanks B.B.

You can't stop it now.
It's comin' just like the rain.
You can't stop it now baby.
It's comin' just like the rain.
I've seen the lightning, heard the thunder, those words make me insane.

You can't stop it now. When you speak your mind.
You can't help yourself baby. When you speak your mind.
I can brave stormy weather. Windy words are trouble signs.

You can't stop it now.
You can't stop it now.
You can't stop me now baby.
The thrill has gone away.
You can't stop it now. I'm leaving today.
(Solo)
You can't stop it now. The flood it's up to my knees.
You can't stop it now baby. No sense in beggin' please.
I've seen the lightning, heard the thunder,
seen the lightning, heard the thunder.
You can't stop it, you can't stop it, you can't stop it.
(2x) I'm leaving today.
(4x) And you can't stop it now.

Blues In Disguise

One of my old friends was going through an on-again, off-again relationship with the girl he was dating at the time. Through the combination of many juicy stories told over those months and the advice I had to offer, I wrote Blues in Disguise and Shame On You (for giving me the blues). Pretty much sums up where that relationship was heading. By the way, my friend has a new girlfriend now and is engaged to be married.

You’ve been out all nigh-igh-ight.
I smell liquor on your breath.
Your close are all ruffled up
and that perfume ain't heaven sent.
Never believed you were an angel
didn’t see that devil in you.
I’ll always love you baby
but how much can you put me thru?

I see the Blues, Blues in Disguise...on my horizon
I see the Blues, Blues in Disguise...on my horizon

You must think I’m a fool
I don’t confront you like a normal man.
When I know full well you been cheatin
and I just slap your hand.
Cause I know I can’t cha-ange her
I’ll share if that what I gotta do.
I’ll always love you baby
but how much can you put me thru?

(Chorus)

So you think I’ve had enough,
I’ve taken every blow a man can stand.
Girl I aint that tough
what you’ve done’s too much to demand.
I’m just holding on hoping
someday you’ll be true.
I still love you baby
but how much can you put me thru?

(Chorus)

I see the Blues in Disguise on my horizon.

Shame On You (for giving me The Blues)

One of my old friends was going through an on-again, off-again relationship with the girl he was dating at the time. Shame on you ,  for giving me the blues
Shame on you and the things you do
Shame on you for staying out all night
And getting your man all uptight<
Shame on you for givin me the blues

(Segue)

Shame on you when I get home
Shame on you for leavin me alone
Shame on you for runnin all around town
With every Tom, Dick,  and  Harry around
Shame on you for givin' me the blues

(Solo)

Shame on me for stayin around so long
Shame on me I should have been long go-o-one
Shame on me    and shame on you
I’m leavin now  this time we’re thru
Shame on you for givin' me the blues
For givin me the blues   For givin me the blues
SHAME   SHAME  SHAME — SHAME ON YOU

Civil

Oprah Winfrey, yes I think she's cool. You might wonder why a musician/contractor would be sitting around watching Oprah in the middle of the day. Well I'll tell you why. Some of the topics she's tackled over the years have giving me some of the best lyrics I've ever written.
In 2009 on her program was a man and I just can't recall his name. (If you know it please contact me). He was talking about how people are just not civil to each other in this day and age. He used examples of couples not getting along and strangers not respecting each other.
That fired up Oprah, and also fired me up to write this song. You got to be Civil.

You got to be civil.    Civil!    If you want to be with me.
You got to be civil.   Civil!    Or baby just leave me be.

Out and nasty and downright rude.
Every time I see ya,  you've got an attitude.
They say misery loves company.  Well I beg to disagree.
I just can't take that third degree

(Chorus)

(Solo)

Think about what you're sayin before you open your mouth.
don't want to hear no screamin all up in my house.
They say patience is a virtue,  I don't have that kind of time.
If you can't be civil you can't be mine.

(Chorus)

(Solo)

I told you time and time, and time again.
Stop all that sassin'.  Your trash talk's gotta end.
Oh you might deserve a second chance.
I'll be the first to let you down.
Next time you come callin' I won't be around.
You got to be civil.  Civil!  If you want to be with me.
You got to be civil.  Civil!  Or baby just leave me be.
Baby just leave
Baby just leave
Babe just leave me be.

The D-Train (Instrumental)

C'mon Mon and the D-Train are songs that were first sparked by the acoustic act that myself and Nick Hutton were performing around the Trenton, N.J. area.  It was a combination of great rhythms and speedy harp licks.  When Paul Plumeri, Jerry Monk and Mike White got a hold of these tunes.  The Trio added that electric element and pushed the grooves right over the top.

C'mon Mon

Lyrics: C'mon, Mon
